Your barefoot sole wore through — but the upper still looks perfect. If your shoes are wearing out too fast, or the sole is worn out in one spot while the rest looks untouched, it's a frustrating situation that many beginners encounter. The good news is that the shoe itself is not to blame. Barefoot soles wear down faster not because of poor quality, but because of gait: feet that have spent years in cushioned, heel-raised shoes tend to land hard on the heel, wearing through the sole in that area long before the rest shows any sign of use. The problem lies in how the body moves, not in the shoe itself — and we'll cover how to work on your gait further in this article. In the meantime, a worn sole doesn't mean the end of the shoe. Barefoot shoe repair is straightforward, and a well-loved pair can easily last several more years.
Repairing rather than replacing is also the more sustainable choice — and the more economical one. A cobbler's patch or a new sole costs a fraction of a new pair, and keeps a well-made shoe out of landfill. From our own experience: a heel patch costs around £15, a full resole around £30, with turnaround of 3–7 days depending on how busy the workshop is (price for the spring 2026 period).

1. Why the Sole Wears Down
Many people who are new to barefoot footwear notice a specific pattern: the heel wore down while the rest of the sole looks almost untouched. Some find they are simply hard on shoes — wearing through the heel far faster than expected. There are two reasons for this, and in most cases it's a combination of both.

Original worn sole before replacement
The first is the sole itself. The sole of a barefoot shoe is thinner and softer than that of a conventional shoe — and this is a deliberate design choice, not a flaw. It's precisely the softness and thinness that allow the foot to flex naturally, feel the ground beneath it and strengthen its muscles with every step. But soft rubber wears down faster than hard rubber, and a thin sole has no reserve of material to draw on the way a thick one does.
The second reason lies in the body's memory of conventional shoes. In standard trainers or shoes, the heel is always raised — the drop between heel and forefoot is typically 8–12 mm or more. The body has spent years adapting to this and has developed a corresponding gait: heel striking — landing on the heel with the same force as if a cushioning layer were still there. In barefoot shoes, that layer is gone — but the heel strike habit remains, leading to an accelerated, uneven wear pattern where the heel sole is worn out long before the rest. The good news is that the gait pattern does change. Over time, the body adapts, the landing becomes softer and more even, and the load is distributed across the whole foot. Sometimes this requires deliberate effort — strengthening the muscles of the feet, legs and the whole body — which we discuss further below. But what can be done about the pair that has already suffered in the meantime?
2. What a Cobbler Can Do
The degree of wear determines the type of repair. A good cobbler will assess the condition of the sole and suggest one of two approaches.
2.1. A Patch on the Worn Area
If only the heel or toe is worn and the rest of the sole is in good condition, a rubber patch glued over the damaged area is enough. It's quick, inexpensive and fully restores the function of the shoe. The photos below show exactly this kind of repair: a rubber heel patch on a pair of Vivo Barefoot trainers and on PALUSTRIA boots by Annika. Both models have different sole types — and the patch holds well on both.

2.2. Full Sole Replacement
If the sole is worn evenly across the whole surface, or has worn through entirely to the point where a patch won't hold, it can be replaced in full. This is called resoling — the cobbler removes the original sole and bonds a new one in its place. The upper remains untouched — the shoe gets a new lease of life. To resole barefoot shoes in the UK, most high street cobblers offer shoe sole replacement; Timpson branches are a reliable and widely available option. The photos below show the result of a full sole replacement on a pair of Realfoot barefoot shoes: a new black patterned rubber sole. There is also a specialist service worth knowing about: Revivo Repairs, which offers full sole replacement specifically for Vivo Barefoot shoes. The quality is reliable, but there are two limitations — it only covers Vivo models, and the cost is around £75, which is close to the price of some new pairs. For that reason, we'd recommend going to a local cobbler. A standard resole with a Vibram sole will do the same job at a fraction of the cost and works across all barefoot brands.
2.3. A Note on Sole Material When Replacing Fully
If you're having the sole replaced entirely, it's worth asking the cobbler about the material. Many will suggest a standard thick rubber sole — durable, but stiff, and the shoe will lose its barefoot properties.
Ask for a Vibram sole instead. Vibram produces several ranges of thin, flexible rubber that preserve the necessary flex and low profile. A shoe resoled with Vibram will remain a barefoot shoe — the zero-drop profile is maintained, and the foot continues to move naturally.
Vibram is widely available in professional shoe repair workshops, so it shouldn't be difficult to source. It's also the sole of choice for barefoot shoe manufacturers themselves — for example, the vegan sandals by BioWorld, available in our shop, are built on a Vibram outsole.
3. Work on Your Gait — and Your Whole Body
Switching to barefoot shoes changes the footwear. It doesn't automatically change the way you walk.
Most of us have spent years — often decades — in shoes with a raised heel and a narrow toe box. That has consequences beyond the feet: shortened calf muscles, weakened glutes, altered hip alignment, reduced ankle mobility. We've been walking since childhood and assume we know how to do it. In reality, years of conventional footwear have quietly disrupted the natural gait pattern — and it takes conscious work to correct it. This is especially true during the transition to barefoot: the body needs time, and sometimes deliberate retraining, to shift away from heel striking and towards a more natural midfoot landing.

Beyond understanding, the work itself matters. Strengthening exercises — not just for the feet, but for the calves, hamstrings, glutes and hips — are what allow the body to walk naturally and efficiently. Strong feet in weak legs is only half the equation. The muscles of the whole lower body need to be developed and capable of supporting natural movement.
Some things worth building into a regular routine:
- Foot strengthening — toe spreading, single-leg balance, short-foot exercises. The foot has over 20 muscles; most people never use them consciously.
- Calf and Achilles work — both strengthening (calf raises, single-leg variants) and lengthening. Years of heel elevation tightens the posterior chain; this needs gradual, consistent attention.
- Hip and glute strength — the hips drive walking. Weak glutes shift load onto the knees and lower back. Squats, hip hinges and single-leg exercises make a significant difference.
- Gait awareness — simply paying attention to how you land, how your weight transfers and how your arms move can accelerate the process. Walking barefoot at home is one of the simplest tools available.

None of this needs to be complicated or time-consuming. But the transition to barefoot footwear is most rewarding — and least likely to result in overuse injuries — when it's supported by deliberate movement work rather than just a change of shoes.
4. Build Your Barefoot Wardrobe
Different activities place different demands on your feet and your footwear. A shoe that works well for a full day of walking around the city isn't necessarily the right choice for the gym, a hiking trail or a wet autumn commute. Building a small collection of purpose-suited pairs means each one does its job properly — and as a bonus, each pair gets used less often, which slows sole wear considerably.
A sensible starting point might look something like this:
- Everyday wear — a leather or canvas shoe for commuting, errands and city walking. Something that looks good and feels comfortable for several hours at a stretch.
- Active use / gym — a lighter, more minimal shoe with good ventilation for training. Ground feel and foot muscle engagement matter more here than weather protection or appearance, so a thinner, more flexible sole is an advantage rather than a drawback.
- Hiking and outdoor activities — a more protective model with a grippier sole for uneven terrain, without sacrificing the wide toe box and zero-drop profile.

- Warm weather / sandals — open footwear for summer days, travel and occasions where breathability matters most.
You don't need all of these at once. But as you spend more time in barefoot footwear, you'll naturally find that certain pairs suit certain situations better than others — and having the right shoe for the right occasion makes the transition to barefoot feel effortless rather than effortful.
Barefoot shoes are an investment in foot health. With proper care and timely repairs, they will last considerably longer than the thin, flexible sole might suggest. A good cobbler is as much an ally of the barefoot wearer as a good shoemaker.
