Vegan Barefoot Shoes: Why Vegan Doesn't Always Mean Eco-Friendly

Vegan shoes are becoming easier to find - but not all vegan materials are equal. Many conventional vegan shoes simply swap leather for synthetic alternatives: PVC, polyurethane, standard synthetic leather. These contain no animal products, but they are made from petrochemicals derived from oil - energy-intensive to produce, slow to biodegrade, and not particularly kind to the planet. Being vegan and being eco-friendly are not the same thing.

For our vegan collection, we chose differently. Every brand and model we carry uses natural or recycled materials - hemp, cork, coconut fibre, organic cotton, linen, natural rubber, plant-based microfibre. The goal is footwear that is not only free from animal products, but causes as little harm to the environment as possible. Vegan and genuinely sustainable.

1. Vegan, Eco-Friendly and Barefoot

Most vegan shoes - even the well-intentioned ones - still come with a narrow toe box that compresses the toes and a raised heel that shifts the body's weight forward. You avoid animal products, but you don't avoid the structural problems that cause foot pain, poor posture and long-term damage.

The barefoot shoes in our vegan collection solve both at once. Natural and plant-based materials that breathe, last and biodegrade - combined with the construction principles that actually let feet do what they're designed to do:

  • Wide toe box - the toes spread naturally, improving balance and relieving pressure at the ball of the foot
  • Zero-drop sole - heel and forefoot at the same height, restoring natural posture and reducing strain on the lower back and Achilles tendon
  • Flexible, thin sole - the foot can feel and respond to the ground, strengthening muscles with every step
  • Natural, breathable materials - hemp, cotton and cork allow air circulation and reduce moisture build-up far better than conventional synthetic uppers

The result is footwear that is kind to animals, kind to the planet and kind to your feet. Some of our vegan models carry the PETA-Approved Vegan certificate - an independent certification issued by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) confirming that every component of the shoe, from upper to adhesive, contains no animal-derived materials. It's the most widely recognised vegan footwear standard and means the verification has been done by a third party, not just claimed by the brand.

4. Sizing & Fit

Vegan barefoot shoes follow the same sizing principles as all barefoot footwear - the toe area should feel noticeably wider than in conventional shoes, with the toes lying flat without touching the edges. Use our Shoe Size Finder - the recommended toe allowance for each model is already built in - or follow the Size Measuring Guide to measure at home.

Hemp canvas softens and adapts to the foot with wear. Plant-based microfibre is consistent from the first day. If you're unsure between sizes, size up.
