Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Barefoot Shoes

Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Barefoot Shoes

Barefoot shoes are a great way to return to natural movement and improve foot health. However, like any purchase, it's important to avoid common mistakes to ensure your shoes are comfortable and long-lasting. Here are some common errors to avoid when choosing barefoot shoes, ensuring your purchase is successful and beneficial for your health.

Choosing the Wrong Size

One of the most frequent mistakes is selecting the wrong size. With regular shoes, we're used to a snug fit, sometimes even too tight. The main principle of barefoot shoes is freedom and natural movement of the foot. To achieve this, you need to leave some space for your toes. A buffer of 0.5–1.2 cm (0.2–0.47 inches) is ideal.

Not Following the Brand's Sizing Guide

Different brands provide different size guides, and your shoe size may vary between brands. Therefore, it's always best to measure your feet properly and select your ideal size according to the brand's size chart. In our sizing guide, you’ll find measurement methods for all the brands available in our store.

Measuring Only One Foot

We aren't perfectly symmetrical, so don't forget to measure both feet. One foot may be wider or longer than the other. Just keep this in mind when selecting your size.

Narrow “Barefoot” Shoes

Unfortunately, not all shoes marketed as "barefoot" meet the true standards of barefoot footwear. Bend the sole to check its flexibility. Ensure there’s no heel lift. To confirm if the shoes provide enough width, look for width measurements in the size chart. If possible, try the shoes on—remove the insole and place your foot on it. Your foot should not extend beyond the edges of the insole.

Ignoring the Specific Activity

It's essential to consider what you need the barefoot shoes for. If you’re purchasing shoes for active use, like hiking or running, choose models with enhanced protection and appropriate cushioning. A common mistake is buying shoes meant for casual wear and using them in high-activity environments. These shoes may wear out quickly and fail to provide adequate protection.

When choosing barefoot shoes, it’s important to avoid these mistakes so that your purchase brings both comfort and health benefits. Be thoughtful in your selection, considering your individual needs and the intended use of the shoes.
